St Basil the Great
Acrylic Paint on Wood Panel with 23K gold leaf
5.5" x 8"

The person commissioning this icon went through difficult health issues which made him realize the fragility of life and gave him a tremendous respect for those who help the sick and the poor. This experience left him wanting to acquire an icon of a saint who is remembered for his or her philanthropic service. After some research he realized that the icon should be of St Basil the Great who is known for his great care and love for the poor and is praised for the construction of a large complex that served as a poorhouse, hospital and hospice.

The man commissioning this icon is a student of classical history and Greek language, so he asked for the text on the icon to be in Greek. The name reads Ἅγιος Βασίλειος ὁ Μέγας - St Basil the Great.

The text on the scroll is Matthew 25:36, "ησθενησα και επεσκεψασθε με"-"I was sick, and you visited me." The formatting of the text on the scroll reflects how early Gospel manuscripts were written - in uppercase letters with no space in between the words
